Reed-bed, Marsh, Fen, Lakeside, Edge of woodland atmosphere MCU calls, Robins, Great Tits, Garden Warbler, Woodpigeon, Wren and Blackcap in distance. USE: N. W. & E. Europe, not N. Scotland. TIME: Mainly early morning and evening, will call all day, late April-mid June.

Song from Garden Warbler, distant Cuckoo at start, song and calls from Blue and Great Tits, Woodpigeons, Pheasant, Moorhen, Wren, Rooks, Cattle, Reed Warbler, Whitethroat and Magpie. USE: W. Europe. TIME: Early morning, late April-June.

CU song, Reed Warbler in b/g, distant Canada Geese, Wren, Cattle, Willow Warbler, Blackbird, Moorhen, Pheasant, Woodpigeons and Whitethroat. USE & TIME: As track 10.

CU song, distant Reed Warblers, Blackbird and Blackcap. USE: W & C Europe, S. Scandinavia, not N. Scotland. TIME: Mid April-July.

Reed Warbler ( Acrocephalus scirpaceus ) Reed Warbler singing prominently, calls from Coot and Grey Herons; Sedge Warbler, Cuckoo, Cetti's Warbler, Mallard, Reed Bunting, Moorhen, Robin, Swallows and Wren in distance, water ripples, warbler giving mimicry. USE: S. England from Somerset-Norfolk, parts of France and Holland. TIME: Mid April - Mid June.

MCU calls from a male, CU Teal and Mallard calls, distant traffic and train. USE: Rare vagrant from N. America which sometimes over-winters or even remains for a year or so. TIME: Jan- April.

CU flight calls from several, wing-beats, Mallard in b/g, distant traffic. USE:In summer: locally in UK; Iceland, Scandinavia, E. Europe, N. Russia. In winter: W. Europe, Spain and patchily in rest of S. Europe. TIME: Any.

CU song, Blackbird in b/g, distant voices and aircraft, end part clean. USE: Rarity in UK. Dense cover in damp areas by marshes or woodland, in S. Finland, E. Europe, W. Russia. TIME: Mid May - mid July.

CU song, Blackbird, occasional voices and pump in distance, distant aircraft towards end. USE & TIME: As track 27.

29. Water Rail ( Rallus aquaticus ) 0'40" Mono

CU calls, distant noise at start, reeds rustling, Robin and Little Grebe call in distance. USE: W. Europe. In summer: E. Europe. TIME: Day or night, all year.

CU flight calls, Curlew and Water Rail in distance. USE: NW Europe. TIME: September - March.

CU calls with another in b/g, water rippling in foreground, reeds rustling in b/g. USE & TIME: As track 29.

32. Little Grebe ( Tachybaptus ruficollis ) 3'33" Mono

MD-CU trills from a pair, Coot and Willow Warbler in b/g, calls from Robin, Crows and Gadwall, water rippling sounds at times. USE: W & E Europe, as spots: S. Europe, Africa, C & S Asia. TIME: Mid April-July, as spots: most active Feb-April, will trill all year.

MCU song with others in b/g, Little Grebe, Coot, Moorhen, Crows, Wren and Pheasant in distance, water rippling sounds at times. USE: W & E Europe. TIME: Mid April-July.

34. Lapwing ( Vanellus vanellus ) 2'45" Mono

MD-CU alarm calls, given in flight and on the ground, Reed Bunting, Moorhen, insects, Reed Warblers, Gadwall, Cuckoo, Blackcap and Coot in distance, distant tractor at times. USE: W & E Europe, as spots: in summer, Scandinavia, N. Russia. TIME: late April-June, as spots: all year.

35. Reed Bunting ( Emberiza schoeniclus ) 0'43" Mono

Cetti's Warbler ( Cettia cetti ) CU song from bunting, MCU song from warbler, distant Wren and Crows. USE: Bunting - W & E Europe, Russia. Warbler- S.England from Somerset- Norfolk, and patchily through France, Holland and S. Europe. Both: S. England, France and Holland. TIME: Spring, Cetti's as spots - all year.

36. Coot ( Fulica atra ) 0'36" Mono

CU sound of Coot running across water, then calls from adult and chicks, Crows, Willow Warbler, Wren and Little Grebe in distance. USE: W. Europe. as spots: as track 24. TIME: June, as spots: all year.

CU single alarm call, reeds in b/g. USE: W & E Europe, Spain, Turkey, W. Russia, S. Asia, E & S Africa, N & C America, E & C South America. TIME: Any.
